![]() And I never even touched the mods for this game, which has some major overhauls that many consider mandatory. I liked it so much that after I beat it, I paid full price for the DLCs, something I almost never do. It was probably my most played game of the year in hours. I finally got around to playing the base game in January of 2021, and once I got the UI down, I was hooked. I love turn based tactics games like Final Fantasy Tactics and the original X-Com, so I was pretty excited about Battletech. Another game I got to later than some (but hey, that’s patient gaming for you!). I highly recommend MWO if you are looking for a F2P online game. Overall, as a very latecomer to this game, I am very happy with MWO. Or you could bank all that free MC from events, but it would take a while longer. ![]() The only time you have to pay with real money is if you want Hero Mechs (variants with unique skills/hardpoints but are not Pay-to-Win) or cosmetics. ![]() And Piranha Games has had so many give aways: at least one free Mech a month (Mech Bay included), weeks of Premium Time (increases in-game currency and XP gains), in-game currency needed to buy new Mechs, parts, and weapons, and most importantly, free MC. For once, a Free-to-Play game is actually free to play. It is now January 2023, and I have 60 Mech Bays, and I haven’t paid a single cent. The Cadet bonuses I received for playing my first 25 matches gave me some MC which I used to buy more Mech Bays. Now, I was worried when I first started that I would max out my Mech Bays (determines the number of Mechs you can have and are only purchasable with a real money currency or MC as the game calls it). And it by far and away has the most comms use I’ve seen in a multiplayer game. And the player base has been largely supportive and friendly in my experiences. I started playing MWO in early September 2022, and it has largely been a blast! MWO released back in 2013, and it still has a small but dedicated player base. As a side note, I am extremely leery of Free-to-Play games in general, but this is an instance where I’m glad I decided to ignore that hesitancy. What better way to get it and my online multiplayer fix than by playing MechWarrior Online. Having played HBS Battletech for the better part of 2021 and well into 2022, I wanted that MechWarrior action, but didn’t have the money to get MechWarrior 5 yet. Everything seemed to be getting twitchier, and me getting older and less time to dedicate to getting better meant I was really frustrated with Counter Strike and Battlefield, the two games I tended to play for that fix. But I found myself not enjoying any online multiplayer FPS for the last few years. I like online multiplayer (or rather, I used to). I’m not going to go into the story of MWO (because I wasn’t around for almost any of it), but I do want to talk about my recent foray. After MechWarrior 4 and its expansions, the IP went dormant for many years until MechWarrior Online. I’m a late comer to all three games (especially MWO), I but played MechWarrior 3 and 4 back in the day, MechCommander 1 and 2 at some point, and MechWarrior 3050 for the SNES even further back. As someone who would call themselves a casual fan of the video game properties (never played tabletop), there are three really good games available on modern hardware: Harebained Schemes’ 2018 Battletech, Piranha Games’ MechWarrior Online and MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries. I have to say, for a niche property, right now is a good time for Battle/MechWarrior fans.
